Remember When

MICHAEL Cain graces the front page of this month’s Remember When, edition 64.

He gets that great distinction, along with an unknown young Geordie autograph hunter because this is one of a superb set of pictures only recently discovered in our photographic archive.

We do not think the pictures were originally printed in the paper when they were first taken, in 1970.

They show Michael Caine both in the serious role of filming and relaxing with a smile, glass of wine and signing autographs between shots.

But this is not he only set of pictures we have dug up from our archives.

This edition is rich in icons because, besides Get Carter, we have a sequence of pictures from the street in Wallsend, famously dwarfed by the then under construction Esso Northumbria.

They are all brilliant pictures, again, most of which have never been seen before.

Back to star quality and we have former model, film and television star Katie Boyle opening the Trenda Shop in Newcastle’s Northumberland Street, in 1970.

Sophisticated Katie delights her fans signing autographs and cutting the tape while chatting away.

Ethel Wilson, of Fenham, who left school at 14, before the war, and worked in the check office at the Newgate Street Co-op, tells us what it was like working in the Timber Corps of the Land Army, during the war.

Ethel can even remember the black crosses on the German bombers as they tried to bomb the Vicker’s factory on Scotswood Road.

We score a hat-trick on the icons by marking the 80th birthday of the Tyne Bridge.

Not letting our heads get too far down in the soccer world we reprint Bobby Mitchell’s account of his years at St James's Park. Bobby earned three FA Cup winners medals with United in the glorious 1950s.

There is simply too much tell of what’s in edition 64, suffice to say it should not be missed and will bring back some great memories.

Being kept down to 50p since its inception it is still beating the credit crunch, so sweep away all that gloom and relax and relive the brighter days in Remember When, on sale at your newsagents now.
